Bowenite is a variety of antigorite serpentine — a magnesium silicate mineral that forms through the metamorphism of olivine-rich rocks. Its jade-like appearance has led to it being called "New Jade" or "Serpentine Jade" in some markets. It's found in New Zealand (where it's been used by the Māori people for centuries in tools and ornaments), Afghanistan, China, and the United States. It was named after George T. Bowen, an American chemist who first described it in 1822.
