Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony quartz colored by iron oxide impurities, ranging from pale orange to deep red-brown. It forms in volcanic rock and is found worldwide, with notable sources in India, Brazil, Uruguay, and Madagascar. Ancient Egyptians called it "the setting sun" and used it in amulets and jewelry to protect the living and the dead. Napoleon wore a Carnelian seal ring he found in Egypt and never removed it.
