Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite (which gives it its blue color), calcite (white), and pyrite (gold flecks). The finest Lapis has been mined in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years — the same mines that supplied ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Ground Lapis was used to create ultramarine, one of the most prized and expensive pigments in Renaissance painting. Michelangelo, Vermeer, and Raphael all used it in their masterworks.
