Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral and one of the most important copper ores on Earth. Its iridescent rainbow colors are not pigment but structural interference — caused by a thin layer of oxidation on its copper-rich surface that refracts light in the same way a soap bubble does. Mexico is one of the world's premier sources of high-quality Chalcopyrite specimens. Note: Chalcopyrite should be kept dry, as moisture can affect its surface iridescence.
