Formation & Fun Facts

Septarian nodules formed approximately 50–70 million years ago when volcanic eruptions killed sea life, and the decomposing organic matter attracted sediment that formed mud balls around the remains. As the ocean receded, the mud balls dried and cracked, creating the distinctive geometric patterns. These cracks were then filled with calcite and aragonite over millions of years. The name comes from the Latin septum, meaning "partition," referring to the geometric divisions within the stone. Major sources include Madagascar and Utah, USA.
