Snowflake Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass (obsidian) that contains spherulites of cristobalite — a form of silica that crystallizes within the glass as it cools, creating the distinctive white snowflake patterns. It forms when lava cools rapidly, preventing the formation of a crystalline structure. Major sources include the United States (particularly Oregon and Idaho), Mexico, and Iceland. Obsidian has been used as a cutting tool and for spiritual purposes for tens of thousands of years.
