Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony quartz, colored by iron oxide impurities that give it its signature range of orange, red, and amber tones. It forms in volcanic rock and is found worldwide, with notable sources in India, Brazil, Uruguay, and Madagascar. Carnelian has been used for over 4,500 years — ancient Egyptians called it "the setting sun" and used it in amulets and jewelry to protect the living and the dead. Napoleon wore a Carnelian seal ring he found in Egypt and never removed it.
