Dumortierite is an aluminum borosilicate mineral that forms in high-temperature metamorphic and pegmatite rocks. Its rich blue color comes from iron and titanium impurities. It's named after the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier, who first described it in the 19th century. Major sources include France, Brazil, Madagascar, and the United States. It's sometimes called "blue quartz" in the gem trade, though it's a distinct mineral in its own right.
