Selenite is a variety of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) that forms in evaporite deposits when ancient seas or lakes evaporate. Its name comes from the Greek selene, meaning "moon" — a reference to its soft, lunar glow. The largest known Selenite crystals — some over 36 feet long — were discovered in the Cave of Crystals in Naica, Mexico. Note: Selenite is water-soluble — keep it dry and away from moisture.
